Trauma
It’s natural to be afraid after something scary or dangerous has happened to you or something you have witnessed. There are different levels of trauma, and almost all people will experience trauma of some kind during their lifetime.
Someone with trauma usually feels they or someone they know are in danger. When this happens, the body responds with a rush of chemicals that make you more alert. This is called the “flight or fight” response. It helps us survive life-threatening events.
Unfortunately, the brain’s response to frightening events can also lead to chronic problems. This can include trouble sleeping, feeling anxious or on edge, being easily startled or jumpy; having flashbacks; or avoiding things that remind you of the event.
Sometimes the symptoms will go away after a week or two. But many times, they last much longer. This is when it is not only necessary to talk to someone. It is also imperative for moving forward in your life.
